2048

MathsSliding puzzleGrid logicSingle playerScore chase

Slide, merge, double. Reach 2048 without locking the grid.

Controls — Arrow keys / WASD on desktop, swipe on mobile. Your best score stays in this browser.

How to play

  1. Slide the grid with the arrow keys, W A S D, or a swipe.
  2. Equal tiles merge into one double tile — every merge is a power of two, and the score is their sum.
  3. Reach 2048 to win — or keep going until the grid locks and there is no move left.

Tips

  • Pick a corner and keep your largest tile there. Two directions, not four.
  • A full row is not a loss; a full row with no matching neighbours is.
  • Sliding up-and-left repeatedly builds a staircase, the cheapest route to 1024 — and the clearest way to see doubling.

About this game

2048 is the sliding-tile puzzle that turned a grid into a habit. Merge matching tiles, double their value, and try not to bury the only empty cell you have left.

Nothing is random except the new tile: every score is 2, 4, 8, 16… which makes it an unusually honest place to feel how powers of two grow.
